Can you drive a car with broken suspension?

12 February 2021

In simple terms, no - you shouldn't drive a vehicle with broken suspension. When a car's suspension breaks, there are multiple components that could be causing the problem - such as a broken coil spring or a broken shock absorber. However, regardless of what is broken with the car's suspension, you should not drive the vehicle.

This is because, if your vehicle is experiencing a damaged or collapsed spring, this can cause sagging - which could cause more damage to your vehicle over time. Other elements of your vehicle that suspension is likely to affect include alignment angles, the control and the stability of your vehicle.

Signs of vehicle suspension problems

Symptoms and signs that you should look out for to diagnose car suspension problems include:

  • A bumpy ride
  • Lack of stability while driving your vehicle
  • Abnormal tyre tread depth
  • Vehicle pulls to either side
  • Difficulty steering your vehicle

Find out more information on the signs of suspension problems and how long suspension in vehicles should last from our detailed guide on what car suspension is.
